As a matter of fact, I am happy to say I don’t like what normal looks like anyway!
I am 55; I have a 16-year-old daughter. The entire time she was growing up, the people who became my friends were friends because we had kids the same age. I have almost always been the oldest of all of the group, but for the life of me, I don’t understand why I am the only one that does anything!
I have always been one of those people that can’t sit still. I work at a radio station where I mostly stand during my shift, doing little dances to the songs that play. At home I sit down to write, eat dinner and late at night watch a little TV. That’s it for sitting down; just doing nothing is something I can’t do well! In fact, I don’t think I’m capable. If my body isn’t moving somehow, someway, my brain is on overload!. On a lazy Sunday when my husband sits down and watches golf for hours, I just don’t get it! How do you do nothing? I know, I am the one that is not normal.
As a family, we are always on the go. During the winter, we are snow skiing like crazy, and we normally take at least one extended ski trip to usually Canada. During the summer we are water skiing, (yes I ski on one ski), rafting, (yes I was a guide), jumping off cliffs (actually I dive), camping, backpacking, rock climbing, hiking, golfing, bike riding… Do you get the picture? We like to get out and play! We love to live!
By myself I play indoor soccer every Monday night. I work out my vacations around my indoor soccer as I hate to miss! It is the most fun I’ve ever had. I get to hang out for 90 minutes with a bunch of other ladies that love it too; no more going to the bar for a mom’s night out! Give me my soccer!
The people who have been my friends over the course of the years are great at being parents but as the years have worn on, and the kids have grown, their activities have changed. Because our kids are all doing different things now, mostly sports, some of the wonderful connections have faded, some are lost.
I think we all tend to seek out people we feel are like us; I believe water seeks its own level. I enjoy being around strong, secure, confident people with huge dreams and lots of energy. Even better if they have a tendency to not ever want to sit down.
It’s funny how I truly feel like I’m 30 years old. When people point out people to me that are my actual age, the ones that look the age I am, I almost choke! What a difference it makes when you live like a young person and feel like you are young. When you act young, it shows!
I wish everyone would try harder to stay young! When you get out and live, I will be proof that you live much longer! How’s that for confidence?
If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space!
